In honor of National Drink Wine Day let's talk about something important...
Can you partake today if you're breastfeeding?
The short answer is yes, in moderation.
The common rule of thumb is that if you are sober enough to drive you're sober enough to nurse. The AAP gets a little more detailed and suggests that moms consume no more .5g of alcohol per kilogram of mom's weight which averages out to about a 2oz shot, and 8oz glass of wine, or two beers. They also reccomend waiting about 2 hours after your last drink to nurse. There is absolutely no need to pump and dump unless you are only pumping while away from baby to help keep your supply up and have consumed A LOT of alcohol. The alcohol will metabolize out of your milk in the same fashion it does out of your blood.
Some mom's even report an increase in supply when they drink dark beers, although there is no scientific evidence to back that up at this time. One study does suggest that consuming more than 2 alcoholic beverages may result in a slower letdown.
